Drinan: I Knew the Goal Would Eventually Come
Sunday, 31st Jan 2021 11:05

Striker Aaron Drinan was delighted to score his first competitive goal for the Blues in yesterday’s 1-1 draw at Crewe.

Drinan, who the Blues signed from Waterford in his native Ireland in January 2018, broke into the the first team in pre-season and netted twice in the friendly at Colchester.

The Cork-born frontman made his senior Blues debut on the opening day of the season in the Carabao Cup tie against Bristol Rovers but suffered a thigh injury the following week in the first League One game against Wigan which saw him miss the next two months of the season.

He has now made six starts and six sub appearances but until Saturday was still waiting for his first competitive goal, although had found the net during his spells on loan with Sutton United, back at Waterford, Ayr United and at GAIS in Sweden.

“I just kept doing what I was doing and I always knew that the goal would eventually come, always do your own thing and always back yourself and it just came today, so I’m absolutely buzzing,” he said.

“The first one is probably always the hardest, obviously as a striker you’re judged on scoring goals, so it’s something I’m wanting to add to my game a lot more. It’s good to get off the mark.

“As we were 1-0 down and were looking for that goal, it probably makes it that bit more meaningful to score.

“We’re just looking to build on that point now and are aiming to three points next week and go on a run.

“It’s good that the league’s so tight and a couple of wins can take you up the table.”

Drinan has been unlucky not to find the net previously, particularly in the last away trip to Burton when he hit the bar and saw another effort kept out by the home keeper.

“To be fair, I think in the last couple of games I’ve been making an impact and obviously that was the missing piece to the jigsaw,” he reflected.

“Everywhere I’ve been on loan, every part of my game I think has been good and just getting a couple of goals finishes it off nicely. I’m just looking to build on that with a couple more goals and keep helping the team.”

Drinan knows he has a chance to secure a place in the side with Oli Hawkins out having undergone knee surgery and Kayden Jackson suspended for two more matches following his red card on Tuesday.

“If I just keep going, just try hard to help the team, score as many goals as I can and hopefully the rewards will come,” he said.

“Goals win games, obviously we’re all trying to score. We’ll all just keep going and everything will fall for us all eventually.”

Turning to Saturday’s result, the 22-year-old thought the Blues deserved more than the point: “I think we probably should have won that game, to be fair.

“I think we did a lot more on the ball than they did. When going forward we looked a bit more dangerous than they did, so I think we probably should have got the three points.”

He felt Town might well have won the match had they played the final minutes with their full complement rather than having had Teddy Bishop red-carded for a second bookable offence on 82.

“When you’ve scored, momentum is all your way and the sending off doesn’t help,” he said.

“The same against Sunderland, we went down to 10 men and stuck at the game and probably should have got something there. If we had 11 men out there [against Crewe], we definitely would have given in a nice go.”

Rather than celebrating his goal Drinan spent the moments after finding the net tending an injury, however, he says it was nothing serious.

“Just a dead leg," he said. “I got absolutely smashed, but as long as it went in, I don’t mind.”

And, having scored his first goal, he says he’s looking to start when the Blues host Blackpool next Saturday: “Hopefully, every player wants to start games, so we’ll wait and see.”

Can't believe the above comments.
Let's hope it's the first of many for us.

Let's face it, it was a gift from the defender. Watching town going forward is embarrassing as they have no drive or purpose to their attacks. Just hopeful balls that go nowhere and are easily cleared away. Crewe looked so much better and assured in their attacks as did Swindon the other week.

On another note, Phil Parkinson was sacked at Sunderland in November with the club sitting in eighth place, just 7 points behind Hull at the top. He had a win rate of almost 50%, winning 6 out of the first 13 games.
Please note Mr Evans, Lamberts record is far far worse! Why oh why is he still here????

Law of averages. If you sit in the box for long enough you will probably get one. Hell even I would probably score one in a season if I played enough games in this division. Granted every player has to start somewhere at a club but this is hardly cause for celebration.

I am pleased for Drinan to have scored his first senior goal. The problem lies much deeper though. Continuing with one up front is not the way to get goals. Nor is passing around at the back with no drive or ambition going forward. The players are too used to losing and scraping a goal here and there. The whole mindset needs to change and I can't see this happening under PL.

The goal will give the lad confidence but will mean nothing if Lambert doesn't pick him for the next game.

Let's face it, Drinan and other youngsters are the way we are going for striking options. There is no money to buy a prolific striker and the FFF will make that even more challenging in seasons ahead. We should be encouraging and not criticising him!

Well done for netting your first goal!

On another note, why the hell aren't we reading news that the top level playing footballer, who won a champions league at Dortmund, aka shambert hasn't been sacked? Sorry I had to mention about Paul's previous achievements! He likes to keep it all hush hush and not mention it often.......tick tock Marcus....tick tock.

I know things are terrible and supporters are very disillusioned but I'm surprised to see so many negative/smart comments directed towards young Aaron? He just scored his 1st goal for the club, managed by a dope who is hardly making it easy for strikers to score. Encouragement is what he needs and well done to him.

Agreed limerick, I'm not defending anyones comments above in regards to negative stuff regarding drinnan. I bet some of it though is because people are p!ssed and venting frustration because of the state of affairs at the club , sad times. Lambert you still here?.....

Yes Blue86, the situation is beyond unbelievable regarding where the club is owner and manager wise. Lambert should be gone and it's hard to believe but incredibly there is still time to salvage this season if Evan's did the right thing even at this late stage, 23 games is loads to fix things, I believe the squad is good enough but NO WAY are they playing to potential for Lambert.
Come on Marcus Evan's, give the long suffering Ipswich supporters a break and sack Lambert NOW NOW NOW.

Must agree with Limerick Tractor Boy. We have the players to win but mindset NO under PL.
I believe every supporter now Mr Evans is of the same opinion, PL's time is up. We have the players but not the tactics and that is down to our manager. Paul Lambert has had a decent time to put things right but he doesn't learn from mistakes and metaphorically he keeps on walking into the same doorway without considering a change. I with many others wanted him to do well but he hasn't so just give him his cards and tell him to go and find yet another club to fail at because we are all p***ed off with him.
