Colchester took a huge step towards securing their League Two status with a vital 2-0 home win over Grimsby which also relegated Forest Green.

Colchester took a fifth-minute lead through Tom Hopper, who ran onto Arthur Read's excellent pass and coolly lifted the ball over goalkeeper Jake Eastwood and in.

Cameron McGeehan's low strike flashed just wide for the hosts, before Donovan Wilson went close for Grimsby.

Mariners defender Doug Tharme nodded Jayden Fevrier's goalbound effort off the line but Grimsby almost equalised in first-half stoppage-time when Colchester's Jay Mingi made a crucial block to deny Justin Obikwu.

Colchester went close on the hour when Fevrier's cross-shot grazed the far post and at the other end, Harry Clifton threatened with a downward header for Grimsby.

John Akinde doubled the hosts' lead in the 79th minute when he lifted a fine effort from just inside the area into the far corner, from Noah Chilvers' pass.

Colchester defender Tom Dallison was dismissed for a foul on Obikwu in stoppage-time but the Us claimed victory.

    t's not nice to wish a football club to fail in their goals, but for years I've wished it on Forest Green Rovers- since Dale Vince said that the EFL would be easy, and that they'd be a championship club in 5 Years.
    That hasn't happened, they've just been relegated for the 2nd time in 2 years.
    A magnificent night for the EFL.
    (You can't buy class, which is why I have very little)

    Well done to both Colchester and Grimsby- both teams I really like. I think both are safe now as would be hugely surprised if Crawley don't beat Sutton as they must do so to keep their play-off hopes alive.

    I hope Colchester and Grimsby pull their socks up next season as both were incredibly poor this season ( but thankfully not poor enough ).

      I'd be with you all the way, GTFCfish, but I've seen so many worse performances, this seemed half way decent. I am confused. I went away to Salford when we won 3 nil and we did the same to Crewe last time out, but other times it is like our players think social distancing is back and we shouldn't get too close to the opposition, in case we pick up a virus. I think it must be a management problem.

    Great result yesterday well done u's..quick point tho can't help thinking if Colchester would lower their ticket prices they would definately up their attendance...I get their early bird prices but sometimes people want to go on the day itself not plan a week in advance..Colchester need to concentrate on getting a bigger fan base-and with the increasing population of the town/city its do-able.

      He went in hard on us and there's always the risk of it backfiring and him looking like a bit of an idiot, which was definitely happened there. He seemed certain we were going down but the Cowleys have turned it around!

    Well done u’s. A hard fought but deserved win. Grimsby upped their game 2nd half but we stood up to their get it in the box tactics. Build in the summer and get a decent team ready for maybe a promotion push.

    I can’t believe how easily we lose games. We needed a point tonight, but we didn’t show any urgency until we were 2 down. Against a team that in all honesty did nothing from the 5th minute onwards. Don’t feel it would be any loss if we only keep Rose and Thompson for next season from this shower. I know it’s not Artell’s squad but if this is all he can muster, I’d think twice about keeping him on.

      Colchester fought hard all the way and it's not their fault that we conceded so early and that they won by 2 goals and were good value for the 3 points. Dave Artell has already had a transfer window and it still remains that our highest scorer was signed by his predessor Paul Hurst. Our defence needs work. Sometimes we look OK but often it seems we would go to pieces if 2 girl guides ran at us.

    For the 1st time for a while, I feel it will be ok for another season, but the U's have to improve or their luck will run out one of these seasons. But for now, excellent result and feeling good right now.

    Well done Colchester. There's a lot of Grimsby fans on their forum who must have a bad bit of Harry the Haddock. Lots of sour comments.
