Former Ipswich Town midfielder Anthony Wordsworth has left Chelmsford City after his contract expired at the National League South side.

The 35-year-old joined the Essex side last summer after spells with Cheshunt and Enfield Town during the 2022/23 season.

Wordsworth made 25 appearances and scored two goals in the league as he helped the Clarets finish second in the sixth tier, but they were beaten 3-2 by Braintree Town after extra-time in the National League South play-off semi-finals.

He played alongside current Town youngster Finley Barbrook, who enjoyed a successful loan spell at the Melbourne Stadium and won the Blues' Academy Player of the Year award.

Speaking about Wordsworth's departure, Clarets manager Robbie Simpson said: "What an amazing guy, he was probably the most popular guy in our dressing room and he knows when to be serious and make sure that the lads are on it but also knows when to lift the spirits and have a laugh."

"He is an absolute diamond of a bloke and, it doesn’t need to come from me, but what a brilliant player he is, just look at the levels he has played at."

"I believe he may have a fantastic player coach opportunity which will be amazing to him but also amazing for the young players who can learn from what he has got to give and all his experiences."

In total, he played 20 times and scored two goals during his spell at Portman Road, having signed from Colchester United for £100,000 in January 2013.
